Lamentations in Senate over Brain Drain

The Senate expressed concern over the increasing brain drain in Nigerian Universities and other critical sectors.

They called for an increase in yearly budgetary allocations to address infrastructural decay and improve the remuneration of lecturers.

The Senate also mandated relevant committees to work with the Ministries of Finance, Education, and Health to develop strategies to curb brain drain.

The motion was sponsored by Senator Anthony Ani, who highlighted that many Nigerian universities operate with less than 50 per cent of the required academic staff due to brain drain.

The remuneration of Nigerian University lecturers has not been reviewed for over 15 years, making it among the poorest in the world and leading to better working conditions in other West African countries.

The Senators emphasized that brain drain is not limited to universities but also affects critical sectors like health, with many healthcare workers leaving for better opportunities abroad.

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, acknowledged the severity of the issue and pledged to improve the situation for university teachers and others affected by brain drain.
