The chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Yola and District Society, Mr. Daniel Sakiyo, emphasized that accounting is not just a profession but a crucial pillar of national development.
Mr. Sakiyo made these remarks during the “Catch Them Young” program held at the FAAN Staff Academy in Jimeta and Capital Day Secondary School, organized by the ICAN Yola and District Society.
Accompanied by the vice chairman of ICAN Northern Zone, Mr Japhet Wakili, and other executive members, Sakiyo explained that the initiative aims not only to promote accounting but also to shape the futures of young individuals, create opportunities, and establish a foundation for financial literacy and economic growth.
He pointed out that accounting serves as the backbone of every business, organization, and government institution, ensuring financial stability, transparency, and economic progress. Without accountants, he noted, businesses would face challenges in tracking their earnings and planning for the future.
Mr Sakiyo described the ICAN Catch Them Young program as designed to inspire and nurture young minds, encouraging them to view accounting not just as a career option but as an essential life skill.
He outlined three core objectives of the program: promoting accounting as a career choice, developing accounting skills, and fostering financial literacy.
Sakiyo further highlighted the event’s benefits, which include early exposure to accounting, improved financial literacy, career development, and networking opportunities.

In his welcome remarks, Chief Isah Mustapha, the vice chairman of the ICAN Yola and District Society, expressed their passion for nurturing young talent and guiding students toward better career choices. He emphasized the organization’s commitment to complementing the efforts of schools in shaping students for the future.
In their responses, Mallam Sani Ya’u from FAAN Staff Academy Jimeta and Glory Leslie, representing the principals of Capital Day Secondary School, expressed their appreciation to the ICAN Yola and District Society for the initiative, urging students to make the most of the knowledge gained.
Highlights of the Catch Them Young program included a question and answer session, presentations of educational materials, and awards for the top accounting students: Jamila Bello from FAAN Staff Academy Jimeta and Frama Ezra from Capital Day Secondary School Jimeta.
