EASTER VISIT: BISHOP MAMZA CALLS FOR SPEEDY TRIAL OF INMATES

The Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese, Stephen Dami Mamza, has called for the speedy trial of inmates awaiting prosecution to help decongest correctional facilities across the country.

The Bishop made the call during his Easter visit to the Yola Old Custodial Centre in Adamawa State.
Speaking during the visit, Bishop Mamza also urged authorities to rehabilitate correctional facilities to meet modern standards. According to him, improved conditions would help inmates feel a sense of belonging while serving their time.

He explained that the visit was in line with the Christian tenets of Easter, which commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the salvation of mankind.

As part of the visit, the Bishop donated relief items including a cow, two bags of rice, detergents, Izal, and other essentials to enable inmates celebrate the Easter season in a joyful atmosphere.

Bishop Mamza further expressed concern over the prolonged detention of inmates without trial, noting that such delays hinder the effective operation of custodial centres nationwide.

Responding, the Officer in Charge of the facility, Chief Superintendent of Corrections, Kassam Nentok, appreciated the Bishop for the visit and support extended to inmates during the Easter celebration.
He also appealed to the Federal Government to ensure speedy trials for awaiting inmates to ease congestion in correctional facilities.

Religious representatives within the inmates equally commended the Bishop for identifying with them during the Easter period.
